J+F Tails and Trails

Nestled in the breathtaking Black Hills of South Dakota, J+F Tails and Trails offers an unforgettable horseback riding experience. Founded by Julie and Festus, this trail riding business combines their passion for horses with the stunning landscapes of the region. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a beginner, J+F Tails and Trails provides personalized guided trail rides that showcase the natural beauty of the Black Hills National Forest. Here’s everything you need to know about this unique adventure.

From Minnesota to the Black Hills: A Dream Realized

Julie’s journey to launching J+F Tails and Trails began in Minnesota, where she dreamed of moving "somewhere out west" to work with horses alongside her mother. Initially unsure of the perfect location—ruling out Montana and Wyoming—a friend’s persistent suggestion led her to explore the Black Hills. “I want to go out west though,” she hesitated, unfamiliar with the area. But upon visiting, Julie instantly fell in love with the rugged beauty and endless possibilities of South Dakota’s Black Hills.

Around the same time, Julie connected with Festus online through a Cowgirls and Cowboys group. Their shared love for horses sparked a partnership that would soon become J+F Tails and Trails. Julie visited the Black Hills to meet Festus and scout properties, initially considering the purchase of an existing trail riding business. Though that deal fell through, Julie was undeterred. “I already had everything in motion to move out here,” she recalls. That first summer, she worked at a similar business to gain experience, laying the groundwork for their own venture.

In the winter of 2020, Festus proposed applying for permits in the Hayward area of the Black Hills National Forest. The process, which typically takes two to three years, surprised them with its speed. “Everything went through amazingly quick,” Julie says, beaming. Within six months, they secured their permits, officially launching J+F Tails and Trails by mid-May 2021 after the snow melted and the Forest Service opened the gates.

Crafting Trails in the Black Hills National Forest

Opening J+F Tails and Trails was no small feat. Julie and Festus spent a month preparing trails before welcoming riders, starting with the main paths used by the Forest Service. They then carved out custom routes to offer a variety of ride lengths, from one-hour jaunts to half-day adventures. “It was kinda an adventure,” Julie says of exploring the forest to design trails. Her daughter Janae joined for the first month, helping with horses and trail prep, while friends pitched in to ready the team of eight horses for their debut season.

Their initial herd included Festus’s mules, Jenny and Robert, raised in Hermosa, along with Dandy (a Nakota) and Molly (a Paso Fino). Julie brought Blackjack and Vinnie—quarter horse brothers—Jericho (a Spanish Mustang), and Rhapsody (a spirited quarter horse who later moved to a working ranch). This diverse crew set the stage for a business built on trust, experience, and a deep connection to the land.

Explore the Black Hills: Trail Rides and Options

J+F Tails and Trails offers guided horseback rides from two distinct locations in the Black Hills National Forest: the Ghost Canyon trailhead and the Elk Haven/Spokane Ghost Town area. Each provides a unique way to experience the region’s stunning scenery.

Ghost Canyon Trailhead Rides

Located off Ghost Canyon Road near the Ghost Canyon Getaway resort, this trailhead offers flexible ride options:

  • 1-Hour Ride: Perfect for beginners or those short on time.

  • 1.5-Hour Ride: A deeper dive into the forest.

  • 2-Hour Ride: Ideal for soaking in the scenery.

  • 3-Hour Ride: A comprehensive exploration.

  • Half-Day “Lookout Ride”: Features a half-hour break at a scenic lookout with panoramic views.

Elk Haven/Spokane Ghost Town Rides

For experienced riders aged 13 and up, the half-day rides from Elk Haven offer rugged terrain and breathtaking vistas. A minimum of three riders is required, and bookings can be made via the contact number on the Ghost Canyon website or J+F’s Facebook page. Named for its historical elk population, the area no longer hosts large herds due to increased tourism, though Julie spotted a few elk while prepping trails in 2021.

Riders are paired with horses based on weight and experience. Jenny, a sturdy Percheron draft mule, handles riders over 230 lbs, while other horses rotate based on group size and rest needs. Rides require a minimum of two riders and a maximum of eight, with participants at least six years old. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are mandatory for safety. Julie and Festus personally guide groups of four or more, ensuring a hands-on, authentic experience.

Meet the Horses: Stories of Resilience and Character

The J+F Tails and Trails herd is a testament to Julie and Festus’s dedication. Standouts include:

  • Blackjack: Julie’s trusty quarter horse and go Ascot winning mare’s favorite. “He does everything I need him to do,” Julie says of his spirited yet reliable nature.

  • Jericho: A Spanish Mustang rescued from slaughter 11 years ago, now a gentle “sheriff horse” trusted with young riders. “He’s a mentor to other horses,” Julie notes, highlighting his calming presence.

  • Buddy: Festus’s laid-back quarter horse, unfazed by falling branches during trail work.

  • Peaches: A kid-safe quarter horse recommended by friends, joining in January 2022.

  • Tobi: A leased quarter horse from Wyoming, introduced in September 2021.

Julie’s “group therapy” desensitizes horses to ropes, tarps, and umbrellas, ensuring they’re trail-ready. Newcomer Kali, a Fox Trotter, is still adjusting, showcasing Julie’s patient training approach.

Winter Rides: A New Frontier in the Black Hills

J+F Tails and Trails plans to extend operations into winter 2025, weather permitting. With safety first, rides will depend on snow levels and visibility to avoid slippery rocks or mud. The minimum age may rise to eight, and rides will cater to experienced riders, requiring a high of at least 25°F. Julie recalls New Year’s Day 2021, when despite zero-degree highs, they received ride requests—a testament to the Black Hills’ year-round allure.

Why Choose J+F Tails and Trails?

What sets J+F apart from other Black Hills horseback riding businesses? “We’re smaller, personalized, and personable,” Julie explains. With ample time between rides, guests can chat with Julie and Festus, snap photos, and enjoy a relaxed pace. Their lifelong love for horses and the Black Hills shines through, making every ride a memorable adventure.
